Program structure

The MDE is a three module program, normally taken full-time for three semesters. Courses are taught by the Faculty of Business and Economics (HEC Lausanne) and the Faculty of Law, Criminal Justice and Public Administration of the University of Lausanne.

Module 1 is designed to provide all students with basic knowledge, taking into account what they already know. After completing the courses of this Module, students with a Bachelor's degree in Business should be able to follow virtually any courses in Law at Master's degree level. Similarly, students with a Bachelor's degree in Law need a basic knowledge of accounting, finance, statistics and business strategy. The Business Law Seminar achieves this objective by allowing all the students taking part in the program to work together as a team.

Module 2 offers great flexibility in the choice of courses from among the subjects taught at the Faculty in the areas of both business and law. Students' choices reflect their own preferences and the careers they aim to pursue later. They can also earn mobility credits.

Lastly, Module 3 evaluates the students' analytical and writing abilities, with a choice between an academic research thesis and a thesis focused on their internship in a company.

First module

Module 1 is composed of compulsory courses for a total of 39 credits. Most of these courses are taken in the Autumn semester 4.1, a small number in the Spring semester 4.2, and a seminar is normally attended in semester 5.1.

Module 1 is divided into a series of 3 courses attended by all students (total of 15 credits) and another series of 5 courses attended by students depending on their previous educational background. Students holding a Bachelor's degree in Management & Economics (HEC) attend intensive Law courses, while students with a Bachelor in Law attend intensive Economics and Management courses (total of 24 credits).

Second module

Module 2 is made up of elective courses. They can be attended as early as the Autumn semester 4.1, but they are generally followed in the Spring semester 4.2 and partly in semester 5.1. Students must select courses for a total of 36 credits (more can be allowed on request). There is an extensive list of elective courses for module 2, which is updated at least once every year.

Students can also choose up to 12 credits "outside of the official program", as long as they are offered by the Faculty of Law or HEC.

Students can earn credits in module 2 during an exchange semester in another university, in Switzerland or abroad (maximum 30 credits).

Courses by area, modules 1 & 2

As many students chose to specialize in taxation or banking and finance law, a listing of the courses for each of these areas has been prepared. NB: these listings don't cover all courses offered by the MDE.

Third module

The thesis is generally written during semester 5.1, when students finish modules 1 and 2. Students may opt for a research or an internship thesis.
